The Gelada Project

Geladas are large monkeys that only live in Ethiopia. We need to gain more knowledge about their behaviour and, for this reason, the team of the University of Pisa, in collaboration with the University of Addis Ababa, is working on a project that the GZP has decided to support. This is to collect data on the gelada so as to contribute to the protection of the species.

Threats

The habitat of the geladas is subject to human pressure due to the conversion of entire territories into pastures and cultivated fields.

Many areas are tourist attractions and we do not have enough information about the impact on the well-being and behaviour of the geladas.

The project

Researchers and students from the University of Pisa and the University of Addis Ababa are working together in an unprotected area around Debre Libanos to collect behavioural and genetic data on the geladas.

How many geladas are there in this area? How do they behave? what do they eat? How do they react to the presence of tourists?

What are we funding?

The Gelada project needs funding for:

  • The purchase of materials such as photo and video traps
  • payment of travel and accommodation of Italian students and researchers
  • Payment of local taxes to access the study areas.

The study began in September 2023 and will end in 2025
